The Association of US Catholic Priests joins the United States and, indeed, the whole world in congratulating and celebrating the selection of American Robert Francis Prevost as Pope Leo XIV. As the second Pope from the Americas and the first from the United States, Pope Leo stirs the imagination of the New World and great pride in all US Catholics. We commit ourselves to supporting him and working with him to continue the work of our beloved Pope Francis in bringing the Good News to every corner of the world and including all of God’s people in global development.

We congratulate our Pope Leo XIV, a pope from both North and South America, a pope for the whole world, who proclaimed as Pope Francis did, that God loves everyone! Prevost is the new pope, an American cardinal committed to the reforms Pope Francis began. A report from National Catholic Reporter.

More from Michael Sean Winters, NCR. The first American pope! So many people thought holding a U.S. passport was an insuperable barrier to the election of Augustinian Cardinal Robert Prevost as Pope Leo XIV, but the College of Cardinals thought differently.

Religion News Service calls the selection of Cardinal Prevost “shocking.” See the report from RNS.
