On Environmental Racism, Climate Change, and Pathways to Justice

From CIIS Public Programs

Racism permeates every aspect of society. The way environmental racism and climate change impact marginalized populations can be seen and heard in the broader media landscape, but the full extent of their effects on Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities are often not fully seen or addressed.

Environmental racism is a form of systemic racism in which people of color are disproportionately burdened with health hazards through policies and practices that force them to live in proximity to sources of toxic waste such as sewage works, mines, landfills, power stations, major roads, and emitters of airborne particulate matter. As a result, these communities suffer greater rates of health problems caused by hazardous pollutants.

  • Attendance fees:
    • Free, suggested donation of $10

21-Day Catholic Environmental Justice Challenge

From the Ignatian Solidarity Network

In his encyclical Laudato Si’, Pope Francis invites all people to act on behalf of creation. This call to action is grounded in the principle of integral ecology—the idea that environmental, social, political, and economic systems are interwoven—and sustained by a sense of wonder before the interconnected nature of all life. The environmental justice movement similarly asks us to view the world as interconnected and prophetically calls us to change the systems that create the unjust distribution of environmental hazards.

Faith Climate Action Week

Faith Climate Action Week is ten days in April during Earth Month when IPL congregations focus on how we can all take action to protect our climate. The 2021 theme is – Sacred Ground: Cultivating Connections Between our Faith, our Food, and the Climate.
