Retreat Day Leader: Sr. Carol Zinn, SSJ
Living the Gospel in the Public Square

Sister Carol, a Sister of St. Joseph of Philadelphia, brings to the position extensive knowledge of Leadership Conference of Women Religious and the opportunities and challenges facing religious congregations throughout the nation. She was a member of the conference from 2009-2014, and during that time she served as chairperson of Region 3 (2010-2012), and in the LCWR presidency (2012-2015). Currently, she is concluding her employment as a senior vice-president for mission integration at Plante Moran, where her responsibilities included working with leaders and members of religious congregations as they discerned and planned for their mission into the future.

Prior to being elected to leadership in her community, she was the representative of the Congregations of Saint Joseph at the United Nations from 2001-2009, and was the education program director for Global Education Associates from 1996-2001. She also served as a teacher on the elementary, secondary, college, and post-graduate levels, in educational leadership in elementary and secondary schools, and in religious education and music ministry in various parish and diocesan venues.

Faithful Citizenship in 2020

John Carr, the longtime director of the U.S. bishops’ domestic and international policy programs, retired in 2012 from the USCCB policy office in 2012. He accepted a fellowship at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

According to CNS, he said he and others have long said “we sometimes feel ‘politically homeless,’ alienated from polarized politics and false choices that ask us to choose between defense of the unborn and protection of the poor, between Catholic moral principles and the church’s social teaching, between promotion of economic justice and protection of religious liberty.”

Our Faith, Church Teaching, and Legislation

Sister Carol Keehan, DC, is a member of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. From 2005 until her retirement in 2019, she served as the ninth President and CEO of the Catholic Health Association of the United States, overseeing all activities of the organization that includes some 620 hospital affiliates. 

Sister Carol was awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice by Pope Benedict XVI. For her dedication to “carrying on the healing ministry of Jesus Christ she was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World for 2010.

Keynote: Archbishop John Wester
Priest, Pulpit and Politics: Proclaiming the Gospel in Today’s Society

Keynoter Archbishop John C. Wester is the episcopal moderator of the AUSCP. He was ordained a priest in San Francisco in 1976, serving in parish and school positions. He was ordained as auxiliary bishop in 1998, serving as episcopal vicar for clergy and vicar general for the archdiocese. In 2007, he was installed as Bishop of Salt Lake City in 2007, then as Archbishop of Santa Fe in 2015.

Assembly Wrap Up: Sr. Simone Campbell, SSS
Practical Action in this Election Year

Sister Simone Campbell has served as Executive Director of NETWORK since 2004. She is a religious leader, attorney and poet with extensive experience in public policy and advocacy for systemic change. In Washington, she lobbies on issues of economic justice, immigration reform, and healthcare. Around the country, she is a noted speaker and educator on these public policy issues.

During the 2010 congressional debate about healthcare reform, she wrote the famous “nuns’ letter” supporting the reform bill and got 59 leaders of Catholic Sisters to sign on. This action was cited by many as critically important in passing the Affordable Care Act.
