Just a question for us Catholics. Did you hear from the pulpit or read on the
website of the Cleveland Catholic Diocese [or any other Catholic source] the letter from the U.S.Conference of Catholic Bishops on Nov. 12 th about immigration?
In part, the over 200 bishops said: “ We are saddened by the state of contemporary debate and vilification of immigrants…We are concerned about the conditions in detention centers and the lack of pastoral care… We recognize that nations have a responsibility to regulate their borders and establish a just immigration system…
We oppose the indiscriminate deportation of people. We pray for an end to
dehumanizing rhetoric and violence. We will continue to advocate for meaningful
immigration reform.”
For those who might object to this, please remember that POLITICS is about laws that govern relationships between people. MORALITY is about what a community of faith believes about God’s laws about relationships between people. A church is obliged to ask the hard, sometimes divisive questions so that we each can make our own conscience decisions. So yes, national policies and budgets are MORAL documents.
We each have a “prophetic voice” to use to remind ourselves of who we are as human beings… And courageously use it!
