SUMMARY:Climate Change and Migration: Two Interconnected Crises
DESCRIPTION:(All who register will receive a link to the recording.) \nThe immigration crisis and the climate crisis are interconnected. Climate change is one of the driving push factors of global migration as weather related disasters (hurricanes\, drought\, flooding)\, and sea level rise make large swaths of land unusable and undermine the lives and dignity of small farmers and farmworkers and impact many national economies. Our immigrant brothers and sisters who are seeking a new life because of climate change impacts need our support. \nIn this webinar we will explore some of these climate push factors impacting global migration\, how Catholic Social Teaching informs our response\, and hear from those on the ground of the immigration crisis as to how the Church IS responding. \nPanelists: \n● Most Reverend Joseph Tyson\, Bishop of the Diocese of Yakima\, chair of the USCCB’s Pastoral Care for Migrants\, Refugees and Travelers\, and Catholic Climate Covenant’s Episcopal Moderator \n● Chloe Noel\, Environmental Research and Policy Advisor\, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops \n● Jesús de la Torre\, Assistant Director for Global Migration\, Hope Border Institute For more information\, contact paz@catholicclimatecovenant.org.

SUMMARY:Pope Leo XIV’s New Challenge and Moral Leadership on Poverty\, Work\, and Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:In his new apostolic exhortation Dilexi te (“I have loved you”)\, Pope Leo powerfully elevates concern for the poor as a central theme of his pontificate. He writes\, “The condition of the poor is a cry that\, throughout human history\, constantly challenges our lives\, societies\, political and economic systems\, and\, not least\, the Church. On the wounded faces of the poor\, we see the suffering of the innocent and\, therefore\, the suffering of Christ himself.” \nPope Leo’s strong focus on the poor is situated within his acknowledgement of our rapidly changing social and economic context.  Just after he was elected\, Pope Leo said the Church should offer “her social teaching in response … to developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defense of human dignity\, justice\, and labor.” Concern for the poor combines with new moral questions around the impacts of artificial intelligence\, especially on workers\, to form the central themes of his early pontificate. \nThis timely Public Dialogue will respond to Pope Leo’s powerful challenge to the Church to refocus on the poor and his questions regarding the moral and human impacts of artificial intelligence at this time of economic turmoil and transformation. \nFour outstanding leaders will \n\nAddress the challenges for the Church and our nation of widespread poverty in the U.S. and around the world\, and the message of Pope Leo’s apostolic exhortation Dilexi te (“I have loved you”) on the topic of poverty in light of Catholic social teaching.\nExamine the ongoing mandate of Rerum novarum and other elements of Catholic social thought: the dignity and rights of workers\, just wages\, defending those who are poor\, and support for families and unions.\nExplore how the Church can share the tradition of Catholic social teaching in response to what Pope Leo XIV has called “another industrial revolution… artificial intelligence and new challenges for the defense of human dignity\, justice and labor.”\nLook ahead to how Pope Leo\, the Church\, and others can address the moral dimensions and human impacts of poverty\, AI\, and other economic pressures on workers\, poor families\, and society.\n\nJohn Carr\, founder of the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life\, will moderate the dialogue. For more than twenty years\, Carr led the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ efforts on poverty\, work\, and economic justice. \nPhoto credit: Roman Catholic Diocese of Chiclayo \nParticipants\n\n\n\nCardinal Blase Cupich\nCardinal Blase Cupich is the archbishop of Chicago\, Illinois. A close advisor to both Pope Francis and now Pope Leo XIV\, Cardinal Cupich has been an advocate for Catholic social teaching on human dignity\, the common good\, work\, labor\, and a preferential option for the poor and vulnerable. \n\n\n\n\n\nPaul Almeida\nPaul Almeida is the dean and William R. Berkley Chair at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business. During his tenure\, Dean Almeida has built the school’s capabilities around fields of the future through new initiatives\, including one focused on artificial intelligence\, analytics\, and the future of work. \n\n\n\n\n\nCecilia Flores\nCecilia Flores is the executive director of Catholic Volunteer Network. Prior to this role\, she was a community organizer with Sacramento ACT\, where she worked to address issues of poverty and injustice in California. Flores also spent several years volunteering in Honduras with the Missioners of Christ. \n\n\n\n\n\nLiz Shuler\nLiz Shuler is the president of AFL-CIO\, the first woman elected to this position. A visionary leader and longtime trade unionist\, Shuler has been invited to speak at the Vatican on the dignity of work\, the rights of workers\, and climate change.

SUMMARY:Pope Francis: Pastor\, Prophet\, & Diplomat with Fr. Bryan Hehir
DESCRIPTION:Pope Francis is well recognized for his leadership and innovation within the Catholic Church; his impact on the world may be seen as equally significant. The relationship of pastor\, prophet\, and diplomat illustrates how the internal and external roles relate in his leadership style. Fr. Hehir will explore how the impact of these dimensions of Francis’ Papacy are influencing the world today and into the future. Fr. Bryan Hehir is a priest in the Archdiocese of Boston. He was formerly a faculty member at Georgetown University and Harvard Divinity School. Hehir played a major role in the drafting of The Challenge of Peace and Economic Justice for All\, the US Bishops’ pastorals on the arms race and the US economy in the mid 1980s

SUMMARY:Remembering Pope Francis
DESCRIPTION:After the death of Pope Francis\, the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life and the Office of Mission & Ministry at Georgetown University will bring people together to remember and reflect upon his faithful service\, courageous leadership\, and caring ministry. This dialogue will also explore his continuing impact and how Georgetown\, the Catholic Church\, our world\, and all of us can continue to advance his message: mercy in the Church\, justice in the economy\, care for God’s creation\, and peace in the world. \n\nThe mission and message of Pope Francis have been at the heart of the work of our Initiative since our founding in 2013. His challenging calls to encounter\, engagement\, discernment\, and dialogue reflect the Jesuit values at the heart of Georgetown. As we mourn his passing\, we thank God for his humble ways\, strong words\, and powerful example as our Holy Father. \nIn this dialogue\, we bring together leaders from our Initiative\, Georgetown\, and beyond to remember Pope Francis\, recall his leadership\, and reflect on how we can live out Pope Francis’ calls to share the “Joy of the Gospel” and seek “a better kind of politics” that lifts up the poor and vulnerable and pursues the common good. \nRev. Mark Bosco\, S.J.\, vice president for Mission & Ministry\, will open this Dahlgren Dialogue. John Carr\, founder of the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life\, will moderate the dialogue. \nGeorgetown University’s Dahlgren Dialogues\, co-sponsored by the Office of Mission & Ministry and the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life\, are a series of substantive conversations with experienced leaders in the context of prayerful reflection on current topics at the intersection of faith and public life. \nRecording\nThe dialogue starting at 6:00 p.m. EDT will be recorded and posted online for later viewing. \nPhoto by Tony Powell/Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington

SUMMARY:Everything is Connected: Laudato Si’\, Teilhard de Chardin\, and Catholic Social Teaching
DESCRIPTION:Ten years ago\, Pope Francis challenged us to hear both the “cry of the earth and the cry of the poor” as his groundbreaking encyclical letter Laudato Si’ offered a hopeful vision that called us to care for “our common home” and reminded us that “everything is connected.” Decades earlier\, Rev. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin\, S.J.\, a French Jesuit priest and scientist\, challenged us to see the interconnectedness of all life. This dialogue will explore this call to make connections\, drawing on the teachings of Pope Francis and the life and writings of Teilhard de Chardin\, depicted in the recent film Teilhard: Visionary Scientist. \n\nFour respected leaders with differing experiences and expertise will examine how Catholic social teaching themes found in both Laudato Si’ and Teilhard de Chardin’s work offer a moral framework for addressing the ecological crises of our time and fostering a deeper sense of solidarity with all of creation. The dialogue will explore how Catholic social teaching can inspire transformative action to care for all of God’s creation. \nKim Daniels\, director of the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life and member of the Vatican Dicastery for Communication\, will moderate the dialogue. \nThis gathering is co-sponsored by Georgetown’s Berkley Center for Religion\, Peace\, and World Affairs. \nRecording\nThe dialogue starting at 6:00 p.m. EDT will be recorded and posted online for later viewing.

SUMMARY:Conversations: How Do We Listen to the Spirit? — Session 2
DESCRIPTION:Standing on the foundation of Vatican II teachings\, how do we listen to the voices of the Spirit? \nAs we hear the voices of those who are marginalized\, as we strive to build mutual understanding and find common ground in a polarized world\, what resources can we use to resolve issues when voices differ from ours? How should science inform our teaching at the intersections of faith and science? How do we see Vatican II and synodality coming together in practical\, local ways? \nPlease join AUSCP as we explore these questions in our final series for the Vatican II Working Group’s three-year program. We welcome your voice\, even if you have not attended previous sessions. Help us hear new perspectives. \nTo focus our discussions on how we listen to the Spirit\, we will consider two questions: \n\nWhen we encounter differences\, how do we embrace them synodally?\nWhat resources do we consult?

SUMMARY:Women and Priests-Conversations in the Spirit
DESCRIPTION:Event hosts\, the Women in the Church Working Group of the Association of U.S. Catholic Priests (AUSCP)\, seek to give space for listening deeply to the testimony of sisters and brothers who sometimes experience a judgmental Church instead of a listening and welcoming Church. \nThis call is being hosted in memory of Alana Chen. \nSpeakers:\nOur speakers are Yunuen Trujillo\, Rev. Bryan Massingale\, and Joyce Calvo. Bishop John Stowe will join us for Q and A and prayer. \nYunuen Trujillo is a Catholic lay minister\, faith-based community organizer\, and an immigration attorney with more than 15 years of experience in young adult ministry and a leading figure for inclusive Catholic LBGT Ministry in the United States. She is a Religious Formation Coordinator (Spanish) with the Catholic Ministry with Lesbian and Gay Persons of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and author of the book LGBT Catholics: A Guide for Inclusive Ministry. \nBryan Massingale is a Catholic priest\, author\, activist\, and professor in Applied Christian Ethics at Fordham University. Fr.. Massingale has authored two books and more than 200 articles\, book chapters\, and book reviews. He is a co-editor of \, All of Us: A New Agenda for Catholic Theology from Queer Catholics of Color (Fortress Press\, 2024). He is a leading voice among Catholics advocating the full inclusion of LGBTQ persons in both society and the faith community. \nJoyce Calvo’s daughter Alana Chen died from suicide on Dec. 8\, 2019. Calvo continues to urge all to “stop rejecting LGBTQ+ children” She hopes her advocacy “will alert Catholic parents to beware of the devastating impact the Church can have on their LGBTQ+ children” and “persuade people speaking for the Church to abandon their misguided and dangerous attempts to alter what God has made.” \nSeeking Facilitators\nWe need facilitators for synodal Conversations in the Spirit. Indicate your interest when you register. A one-hour virtual training session is required and a Facilitator Briefing will be held on Feb. 3 at 6pm.

SUMMARY:Leavening Humankind: Lumen Gentium\, Series Summary Review
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Fr. Bob Bonnot and presented by Dr. Joe Torma\n\nLumen Gentium is the first of two Dogmatic Constitutions that were promulgated by Vatican II on December 4\, 1963\, both now listed among the 16 documents adopted by the Catholic Church’s second Vatican Council from 1963-1965. This document merits 4 presentation sessions with discussion among us. Lumen Gentium presented the church as a mystery\, as a communion of baptized believers\, as the people of God\, as the body of Christ and as a pilgrim moving toward fulfillment in heaven but marked on earth with\n\n… “a sanctity that is real\, although imperfect.”\nOur Webinar sessions run roughly 60 minutes until formal closure\, followed by 15-30 minutes continuing discussion by those interested in engaging in more conversation. There will also be a final wrap-up session as we complete our study and discussion of all 16 Vatican II Documents: four Constitutions\, nine Decrees\, and three Constitutions. This series will be timely and enriching as we move toward the final three Synodal sessions of Pope Francis in 2024\, the Church’s pathway to 2025.\n\nRegister HERE.\n\nThis is the final Summary Review of a four-part series.

SUMMARY:Immigration and the Election
DESCRIPTION:With the election around the bend\, we are offering some additional information on immigration issues. The Immigration Working Group is offering a webinar by Ruben Garcia who has been administering the Annunciation House in El Paso\, Texas\, for about 50 years. This center provides housing\, food\, and hospitality for people who have recently crossed the border at this very busy entry point. Ruben is well known for his service to the immigrants/refugees. He hears many personal stories and knows firsthand the present situation at the border. This webinar is a trustworthy fact check for us all. The Annunciation House has been the target recently by those who are against almost any type of immigration. The House almost had to shut down. It will be prerecorded\, but there will be a brief time for comments and questions after the video. \nJoin us on Zoom on Thursday\, October 17th\, 1-2 pm Central time/2-3 Eastern time. \nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:Leavening Humankind: Lumen Gentium\, Part 2
This series will be timely and enriching as we move toward the final three Synodal sessions of Pope Francis in 2024\, the Church’s pathway to 2025.\n\nRegister HERE.\n\nThis is a four-part series with sessions on October 2\, 9\, 16\, and 23. The series will conclude with a November 6 Summary Review.
